Well known to photographers who shoot abandoned places, Cairo is a town beset by a severe decline, leaving it with many abandoned buildings, some of which have become iconic, but all of which are still standing on borrowed time. What is still standing and what has been removed.

Ever heard of these towns? No? That’s why I’m here because in this video I take you to a handful of dying towns that are in Vermilion County, Illinois that are all losing population fast. These towns depended on the railroad, coal and salt mining industries when they were being built. Those industries have all left the area a long time ago, and nothing has taken their place. This region is depressing and it shows through the abandonment that’s seen in these towns, not to mention the county seat of Danville which is has its own video. https://youtu.be/rNSjcGsONhM?si=iSL2WjdyL-wR-bst

It’s located about 2 hours west of Chicago along the Illinois River, or about an hour north of Peoria. The town’s economy thrived off of a large industrial plant in the early 90’s. Unfortunately that plant has made half of the town a Superfund site. A giant pile of toxic waste towers above most of the town, and nothing is being done about it.

MemberFebruary 22, 2025 at 4:46 pm in reply to: Chicago Mayor Breaks Campaign Vow By Hiking Property TaxAt first glance, West Chicago seems like the perfect place to settle down—surrounded by affluent suburbs, home to the DuPage Airport, and nestled in the economic heart of Illinois. But hidden beneath the surface is a decades-old radioactive disaster that still lingers today.
This video dives deep into the history of the Kerr-McGee rare-earths facility, where thorium processing left behind toxic waste that spread throughout the community. From the radioactive mounds at the old factory site to contaminated creeks and even private yards, the aftermath of this environmental catastrophe is still felt by residents. Despite cleanup efforts, can we really trust that all the waste will ever be removed? Or will West Chicago remain a cautionary tale of corporate negligence and unfulfilled promises?Join me as I uncover the shocking truth behind West Chicago’s radioactive past and the lasting impact on its people. MemberFebruary 22, 2025 at 4:38 pm in reply to: Chicago Mayor Breaks Campaign Vow By Hiking Property TaxIllinois ranks as the worst state in many fiscal categories, and the residents are being forced to pay the price. The residents have had enough, and now they’re leaving the state. In this video I bring along Dylan Sharkey, an Assistant Editor at Illinois Policy to help explain how extreme property taxes, high pension debts and corruption have all lead towards Illinois being among the fastest declining states in the nation. Illinois needs competent politicians. The state is under the leadership of JB Pritzker, one of the most incompetent politicians in the nation. Chicago is under fire leadership of Mayor Brandon Johnson another incompetent politicians in the nation. It’s like the dumb leader the dumbest.

If you haven’t heard the news, Illinois is kind of a sinking ship. A lot of people are leaving this state. In fact, more people left Illinois than any other state in the last decade. Last year alone, 51,029 people left the land of Lincoln, meaning .4% of folks skipped town. Many moved to nearby Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and even into the southern states.Every ten minutes someone leaves this state for good. By the end of this video, we’ll see another Illinois goodbye.
Why? For many reasons I’ll talk about, but generally, people are tired of the taxes and the government mismanagement. But it’s also the cold and the gloom and the lack of jobs and the crime. Right now, Illinois is the 6th most populous state, but soon, Ohio will pass Illinois for number of people.
Now the places we’re going to talk about all fit into the ‘sucky’ category when it comes to quality of life. These upcoming cities are all perfect examples of struggling communities in this state, and a big reason why Illinois people are Illinoyed. Here are the worst places in Illinois that you could possibly. It’s places like Chicago, Kankakee, Rockford and Decatur. If you want to move to a city, but need help deciding on which city is the best, I can help you. I do consulting on where you should move. I can also help you find a real estate agent in any city in America. Let’s talk! Email me: alex@gustancho.com.

MemberFebruary 22, 2025 at 4:19 pm in reply to: Illinois Most Sinister State in the NationYes, folks. Illinois is hands down the most corrupt state in the United States 🇺🇸.
Illinois corruption is infamous.
From Chicago aldermen with nicknames like Fast Eddie, Bathhouse and Hinky Dink. To imprisoned governors like Rod Blagojevich and George Ryan. To the Richard J. Daley machine and its most prolific political products: Ed Burke and Michael Madigan. But what makes Illinois so ccorrupts. Scholars like University of Illinois-Chicago Professor Dick Simpson have argued corruption is a cultural problem in Illinois. Rather than a culture of public service and integrity, Chicago and Illinois politicians from both parties see public office as a means for their own private gain. That culture is real and systemic, and comes both from two places: leadership and institutions.
