Why has Fort Knox not been audited in 50 plus years. Why is the government so reluctant of letting the American people audit the gold in Fort Knox. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk and the DOGE team are planning to take the trip to Fort Knox Kentucky to audit 250 billion dollars of Gold. The United States Bullion Depository, situated in Fort Knox, Kentucky, symbolizes American power and security. It contains large portions of the nation’s gold reserves. However, the facility is surrounded by controversy and has not undergone a full public audit for over sixty years. Such allegations call for greater public transparency.
Context from History Regarding Audits
The last recallable audit of the notorious gold reserves of Fort Knox took place more than sixty years ago, in 1953. The audit was performed soon after the president. Eisenhower came into the power audit on a very small basis, as it was said to focus on 6% % of the gold. Sadly, the findings from it were never made public. Since then, the follow-up inspections have not been as thorough and, broadly, do not count as audits. Some visits stand out from the rest, like the tour by some congressional members in 1974 or the visit by the treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, in 2017. Unfortunately, there is no information from these visits as they did not undergo thorough audits, and no information was made public.
Reasons for the Federal Government’s Lack of Motivation and Concealment
There are several explanations for the federal government’s unwillingness to perform and publish detailed audits on the gold reserves in Fort Knox. The primary reason stems from a lack of public trust and transparency of communication throughout the depository. This makes it one of the most high-security facilities in the states. Thus, such a facility has not publicly devolved the contents and security details that make it so sensitive.
Bureaucratic Behaviors
The organization’s internal policies and the absence of external forces may have perpetuated prevailing practices with minimal changes over a longer duration.
Faith in Public Agencies
In the past, there has been unexpressed faith in the government’s promises about the country’s properties, lowering the necessity of conducting public audits.
New Updates
Trump declared that once he assumes office in February 2025, he will audit the gold reserves at Fort Knox with Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team. This project aims to boost transparency surrounding the nation’s assets in the eyes of the public. In Trump’s words, “I’m going to see if we have gold there. We Want to find out. Did anybody steal the gold in Fort Knox?’
Elon Musk, in charge of DOGE, suggested he could livestream the vault’s walkthrough on video. This has also sparked comments from other sectors, like Senator Rand Paul, who argued that a walkthrough video of the vault’s contents would explain many things.
Position of Treasury Department
In light of these conversations, publicly available comments from Treasury Secretary Reason Scott Bessent offered to confirm that annual audits already showed all reserve golds within Fort Knox. The unwillingness to perform public audits through the last couple of decades fuels doubt and girth around the actual mores of the reserves.
The audit, which has the eyeball balls trained on it by President Trump, Elon Musk, and the team from DOGE, constitutes a big move towards being open and trusting in managing the country’s valuables.
This initiative attempts to resolve the persisting lack of thorough audits to shed light on and verify the gold stored at Fort Knox.
