It was supposed to be a carefree Saturday night for this group of High School teens in September of 2015. 17 y/o Benjamin Finken had driven his friends: 18 y/o Dillon Wall, 17 y/o Kylie Lindsey, and 16 y/o Isabella Chinchilla out to their friend’s house in rural Georgia to spend the evening. However, once the teens got to their friend TJ’s house, the girls stated they were hungry and wanted to return to town to get food before it got too late. Now there was a small problem, driver Benjamin Finken had just gotten his driver’s License the month before, so he still had restrictions on his driving, namely a curfew, meaning he couldn’t drive past midnight. So it was decided that 18 y/o Dillon Wall would take over driving responsibilities for Benjamin and drive the teens up to McDonald’s, just before 11:30 pm.
At this same time, Georgia State Trooper AJ Scott was clearing up from a traffic stop after pulling over a driver who was doing 96 mph in a 65 mph zone. Earlier in the evening, Trooper Scott gave his hip radio to another Trooper so he could charge it. Following Trafficop, Trooper Scott returned to meet with his colleague and pick up his radio.
As Trooper Scott drove down Highway 27 to meet his colleague, apparently, he didn’t feel like the laws of the road applied to him, because his speeds quickly climbed to over 90 mph, on a stretch of highway whose speed limit changes between 45 and 65 mph, depending on your location. As Trooper Scott crested a hill on Highway 27, you can see in his dash camera footage, on both sides of the road were signs CLEARLY telling drivers to slow their speed to 45 mph due to there being an intersection right at the top of the hill…however, Trooper Scott ignored these signs. He continued his speed of nearly 90 mph (double the speed limit).
Driver Dillon Wall had just pulled out of a gas station and was going to turn left across Highway 27. Before doing so, he asked Benjamin (sitting in the front passenger seat) to look to his right and make sure there was no traffic coming, to which Benjamin looked and replied that he was clear to cross. However, just a second later, as Dillon attempted to drive across Highway 27, Benjamin stated he looked right again, and this time he saw a pair of headlights come from out of nowhere, headed right for them…
In Trooper Scott’s Dash Camera footage you can see the Trooper attempted to jerk his wheel to the right as he sped toward the teens, in an attempt to miss colliding with their car, however, this was the same direction that the teens were driving in, so just before the collision, Trooper Scott again jerked his wheel, this time to the left, causing him to crash into the back half of the teen’s Nissan Sentra at nearly 90 mph…
Mordaciously, Trooper AJ Scott walked away from the crash nearly unscathed, however, the teen’s weren’t so lucky…and before the night was over, 2 lives would be lost…all because the Trooper thought the laws of the road didn’t apply to him, and as a matter of fact, he would go on to blame the driver of the teen’s car Dillon for the accident!
What would happen next? I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it.
Instead of Trooper Scott going directly to jail for his reckless actions, he not only ran for public office that year in Buchanan, Georgia, but he was ELECTED…and this was just months after the crash.
Trooper Scott probably thought this would all go away with time, and people would forget what happened that night in September 2015…but thankfully, he was wrong.
It would take almost a DECADE, but Trooper Scott finally faced the music in August of 2025, and I will cover the entire case, from the crash to the present day.
