But their lives changed dramatically on 27 October 1998. In 1998, Pamela, a female gorilla, gave birth to the little Digit, whom she refused to feed. Pierre and Elaine decided to separate Digit from her mother and to bottle-feed her. And so they became her adoptive parents.
