Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner: The Enduring Allure of The Bodyguard Soundtrack
The Bodyguard-themed score undoubtedly remains one of the most celebrated. Released with the film in 1992, it was propelled into innovation through its collapsible genre versatility, showcasing pop, R&B, soul, and ballad silhouettes. What added to the accolade was Houston’s powerful and astonishing performance of “I Will Always Love You,” highlighted within the movie’s soundtrack. Beyond what was discussed as pure entertainment, the synergistic dynamics of Costner and Houston seeped timeless appeal and romantic magnetism into the air with every love song they shared.
The Evolution of ‘The Bodyguard’
To construct a musical behemoth like The Bodyguard, hiring Whitney Houston alone as the romantic lead was a faux pas for Create-Koz. The tenderness of their emotional spark was neatly escalated with her easier ontogenic niche, exuberant dancing. Her adept enterprise acumen had always suggested carefree ease, unrelated to romance, joy, exuberant sex appeal, or flirtation. In frankness, expressionless, bite-sized kaleidoscopes that make up societal emotions had morphed into adulation of her.
The plot revolves around a former bodyguard turned professional protector, Frank Farmer, played by Costner, for his new client, a mainstream actress and singer, Rachel Marron, played by Houston, who faces neck-deep rivalry in her field. Tackling stalking concerns efficiently through physical prevention became an effective damage control. The release date for this was set to align for synchrony during the holidays, giving parents ease from school to take them. Because it resonated with the teens from then on, a box office estimate was set to nullify every single animation that aired.
The Bodyguard’s origins trace back to the mid-1970s when Kasdan wrote it as a script for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross. After receiving multiple rejections and undergoing several changes, the project remained stagnant until Oscar-winning actor Costner, who basked in the glory of his success with Dances with Wolves, came to its rescue. He assumed the role of Frank, and, in addition to acting, he produced the film, thereby assuming a critical role in its development. He made the momentous decision to cast Houston for her first acting role.
Houston, who was already an international music star and had sold millions with her albums Whitney Houston and Whitney, was reluctant to accept the role of Rachel Marron. She was concerned about the backlash she would receive for trying to act, which many pop stars had found difficult. On his part, Costner thought that she would be ideal not only because of her looks but also because her presence commanded amazing attention. He infamously said, “I will not let you fall,” and urged her not to take acting classes, claiming that she would do wonderfully if left on her own. Their mutual trust allowed the film to connect with audiences, irrespective of the negative reviews it received from critics.
The Soundtrack That Conquered the World
Although The Bodyguard offered romance, action, and suspense, its unforgettable soundtrack was the film’s legacy, surpassing 50 million copies sold and earning the title of best-selling soundtrack album. Whitney Houston’s contribution of six songs turned the film into a cultural phenomenon. The Grammy Award for Album of the Year was granted to The Bodyguard soundtrack, and its songs “I Have Nothing” and “Run To You” capped off an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” is arguably the album’s centerpiece. Parton penned and recorded the song in 1973 as a goodbye to her musical companion Porter Wagoner. She sang it as a soaring R&B ballad that David Foster produced. Kevin Costner decided to include the song, but only if sung a cappella, a bold move that scared record executives, terrified of the song receiving airplay. Other options like Jimmy Ruffin’s “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” were pitched but turned down.
To this day, Houston is recognized for her a cappella intro with the ethereal line, “If I should stay…” which has been credited as one of the greatest moments in music history. In David Foster’s words, “When she opened her mouth, I realized that Kevin Costner had come up with one of the greatest ideas in the history of movie music.” While watching the recording, Houston’s mother, Cissy, told Foster, “You’re witnessing greatness right now.” The combination of the song’s peak moment, which is emotionally powerful, and Houston’s unmatched vocal prowess made it a phenomenon, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 14 consecutive weeks and becoming one of the best-selling singles in history.
Highlighted other tracks consist of:
“I Have Nothing”:
A forceful ‘power ballad’ that Houston conveys heartbreak beautifully in Rachel’s singer’s portrayal after Frank ends their affair.
“Run to You”:
This song depicts a turbulent turning point in the relationship. It is also part of a music video depicting Rachel and Frank’s romance.
“I’m Every Woman”:
Houston performs an energizing and empowering song in one of Rachel’s concerts early in the film.
“Queen of the Night”:
This is an upbeat one. Rachel’s concert in the film gets chaotic, and Frank saves her from the riot. Then she screams this high-octane “Queen of the Night.”
“Jesus Loves Me” is a sweet moment with Rachel and her sister Nicki. This duet later recurs during Nicki’s funeral.
As a late pop icon and early movie star, Houston gives out the “I” in the case study of Whitney Houston.
