If you consider getting a monkey as a pet, it is important to realize that although they can be fascinating companions, they are not domestic animals like dogs or cats. They need special care and attention and may not always behave as you want. Moreover, keeping monkeys as pets is regulated by law in many places and may be illegal in some areas.
Types of Monkeys Commonly Kept as Pets
Capuchin Monkeys
Characteristics: Capuchins are small primates with high intelligence and manual dexterity and are among the favorite primate species kept as pets.
Pros: They can be trained easily and form close bonds with humans.
Cons: Capuchins require lots of mental stimulation and social interaction and can get aggressive if neglected or not properly socialized.
Marmosets (Finger Monkeys)
Characteristics: Marmosets have a tiny body size, fast movement, and delicate features. Marmosets are often described as “finger monkeys” because they’re one of the smallest monkeys.
Pros: Due to their small size, marmosets are easier to handle than other species. They can also show affection towards humans and be given appropriate care.
Cons: Marmosets tend to become territorial, making them unsuitable for living with other pets. This is compounded by complex dietary requirements and habitat needs that must be met for their well-being.
Tamarins
Characteristics: Tamarins, being small-sized, colorful monkeys always appear playful.
Pros: These monkeys could be quite social with people they recognize, forming attachments too.
Cons: Their nutritional demands are quite complicated, especially when kept within homes where meeting such needs becomes challenging. Also, tamarins require large spaces since these animals love swinging from branches during playtime and climbing walls whenever possible. Thus, owners whose houses have wooden structures supporting upper floors, which could easily give way under the weight exerted by tamarins after attaining certain ages or sizes, must exercise extra caution.
Cons: Tamarins are small, colorful monkeys known for their playful nature. They can be social and affectionate, forming bonds with their owners. They require a specialized diet. Their social needs may be hard to meet in a home environment because they need trees to climb on and swing from during playtime.
Squirrel Monkeys
Traits: Squirrel monkeys are small size primates with lively personalities who love climbing around and playing all day long
Though having a pet monkey might seem like a good idea, they are not easy animals to care for. They need much time and effort and a deep understanding of them. When you want to create the most appropriate conditions for them. Ensure your preparations are wide-ranging and include ethical and legality issues. It should also be considered through proper investigation. Moreover, it is recommended to seek advice from professionals in this field or organizations dealing with primates’ welfare before deciding whether or not one should keep them as pets.
However, in the United States, where the well-being of humans and animals ought to be considered more often than not, the disadvantages of keeping monkeys as pets outweigh their benefits.

What is the huge enlarged red protrusion in the butt area of monkeys. I know baboon has huge ones as well as the macaques monkeys in Vietnam.

Ischial callosity typically refers to the thick red bulge at a monkey’s rear. It consists of reinforced skin areas over ceramic bones, and these features are specific to many varieties of Old World monkeys and apes.
Here’s a little more:
Function: Ischial callosities perform multiple functions. They are especially effective for prolonged sitting since, like other monkeys, these primates are always motionless for a long period of time when sitting either in a tree or on the ground. These anatomical features also assist in social activities. In some of these animals, the color and size of their inter-callosal areas can suggest the position of social levels or their ability to reproduce.
Appearance: These colonic callosities differ in coloration and dimensionality. In several species, including baboons, these callosities can be very large and bright red or pink and protrude from the body. This is a result of blood vessels. It is often more visible in females at certain stages, such as estrus, which is the female’s fertile period.
Species Variation: Ischial callosities such as baboons, macaques, and vervet monkeys occur in Old World monkeys. Hence, they are not common with New World monkeys and apes.
These protrusions generally result from special adaptations towards the primate way of life owing to practical and sociable advantages.

Macaques, commonly called “MacCraw,” are popular pet monkeys. Pet Macaques are a huge commitment and require consideration of many factors ranging from legality and ethics to personal practicability. Here is a step-by-step guide to everything you need to know before bringing home a pet monkey.
Understanding Legalities
Check Local Laws: Each state and municipality has different laws regarding the ownership of pet primates. Your first step is to ensure you are legally allowed to own a pet monkey.
Permits: You may also need a few permits or licenses to own a monkey. Make sure to gather all required documents.
**Finding a Reputable Source**
Adoption vs. purchase: To make your purchase, rescue or sanctuary adoption is always a better ethical option than purchasing a pet monkey from a breeder.
Find a Breeder: If adopting is not an option, find a licensed, ethical, and responsible breeder. Also, avoid pet stores that do not offer proper animal care.
Choosing the Right Monkey
- Species: Adult Japanese Macaques and Rhesus range from 15 to 40 pounds, depending on their species.
- Size: Baby monkeys usually weigh 1-2 pounds at birth and grow around 18-25 inches tall.
- Temperament: It is best to choose a baby monkey with a gentle personality that is friendly, well-socialized, and regularly handled.
Training And Socialization
- Training: Using positive reinforcement techniques, it is best to start training as early as possible.
- Monkeys can learn commands and some social behaviors.
- However, the training has to be persistent and patient.
Expert Guidance: If required, a primate behavior specialist can offer suggestions relating to training and socialization.
Caring For Your Monkey
Diet And Nutrition: A healthy, balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, and specialized monkey pellets will be suitable for primate nutrition.
Space And Environment: The monkey should have a safe and spacious place to explore and play. Enrichment provides essential stimulation and is very important for mental health.
Health Care: Routine veterinary care is a must. Find an experienced vet who deals specifically with primates for vaccinations, check-ups, and ongoing health monitoring.
Lifelong Commitment
Longevity: Macaques will live 20-30 years in captivity, which means this is not an animal to adopt lightly.
Behavioral Considerations: With age, monkeys can become more aggressive and will certainly learn behavioral problems over time.
Wildlife Considerations
Surrendering To The Wild: Pet monkeys should not be released into the wild. Domesticated monkeys lack survival skills and can endanger the local environment.
Spaying/Neutering: Discuss the issue of spaying or neutering with your veterinarian to eliminate the chances of aggression and unwanted breeding.
Primates are complex beings and should be treated with care and compassion, so monkey owners must do their homework and understand what the animal will need from them. Make sure that you understand the deeper question of responsibility and ethics. Your most important consideration is to ensure that the animal is well taken care of in terms of its needs and that the environment is suitable for the animal during its life.
